Subject: Update from Australia - What the TUD team did on Saturday -
Pictures

Dear Group and Ambassadors,

Hello from Australia, one of the members of the Technical Update Team
(John Reagan) is posting pictures of the OpenVMS Technical Update
days
team as we travel from city to city attending the TUD's and he is
posting pictures of what we are doing in our free time. If you would
like to accompany us virtually (with out the 64 hours of flying) he has
posted the pictures at: http://www.pbase.com/jreagan/worldtrip these
pictures have everyone on the teams approval.

Saturday we went to the zoo, John Gillings met us at our hotel with his
beautiful baby daughter and we all took the ferry to the zoo. Sydney
has this great ferry system where you can connect to a lot of places and
it really is a beautiful way to see things and get transport at the same
time, I think is a wonderful way to get around. When you get to the zoo
you then take a cable car (John Brodribb and his lovely wife joined us
here) to the top of the zoo and walk around. Because so many of the
animals are nocturnal there are many nocturnal houses. By the way in
case you are wondering a platypus is only about 8 inches long and a
wombat is huge and they have some beautiful constricting snakes, up
until yesterday I did not know that there were pythons in Australia. I
only knew about the poisonous ones. One of the things I find amazing
about Australia is the birds that just fly around here. You know the
white cockatiel with the yellow bit on the top of their head, they are
in flocks of 30-50 here. Little green and blue parrots as well as love
birds.

Last night (Saturday Nov 5th) we had a cook out at John Gillings house,
put on by John G and his wife Sharon who is lovely and John Brodribb
and
his equally wonderful wife who are the local VMS Ambassadors. There is
so much to say it is almost overwhelming. The first surprise came when
we arrived and OpenVMS Ambassador (retired) Rein Timmer from the
Netherlands was there, he has been in Sydney attending his daughters
wedding. John G and John Brodribb had managed to keep this surprise
from me and it was a wonderful reunion. There were a number of folks
from the local office its wonderful when you finally get to put names
with faces that you have known electronically for years. The next HUGE
thing that happened is that the Gillings neighbor works with hand
raising some of Australia's animals and reptiles. This was one of the
most rewarding experiences in my life, there were some beautiful
lizards, a black diamond python that I got to hold and get this its so
cool I got to feed yep feed a baby wombat and it fell asleep in my arms,
they sure are strong little things and they grow big you can see
pictures from the zoo on the web site. There was also a ring tail
possum (not the same as in the US) and very cute it looks more like a
flying squirrel to me. (someone took pictures but I was so excited I can
not remember who)

For the gourmands in the crowd I did learn that Shrimp on the barbie
was
not what was on the menu however crocodile, kangaroo, buffalo, emus
(yes
I tried them all) was oh and the difference between shrimp and prawn
is
prawn has the heads on. We also had steak and some of the best fruit
I
have ever had.

This was one of the best days in my life. Like gems on a necklace.

Warm Regards,
Sue
