SECURITY ISSUES
***TechWorld: Serious vulnerabilities have been found
several popular security software tools recently, namely
Sophos Anti-Virus, ClamAV and the network protocol scanner
Ethereal. The flaws could allow complete system takeover,
according to researchers.
Fixes are available for Ethereal and ClamAV, but Sophos
said it hasn't yet patched all affected versions of its
software.
http://www.techworld.com/security/news/index.cfm?
NewsID=4120&Page=1&page
Pos=11
[Its not a problem for the Sophos Virus scanner than runs
on VMS and I would expect that the other issues are less
of a problem as the buffer overflows would cause the
process to crash but not present an opportunity to
compromise the security of the system.]
*** There is a problem in the zlib compression library
which some software ported to VMS uses. An updated version
- zlib 1.2.3 is just out http://www.zlib.net/
From the page: Version 1.2.3 eliminates potential
security vulnerabilities in zlib 1.2.1 and 1.2.2, so all
users of those versions should upgrade immediately. The
following important fixes are provided in zlib 1.2.3 over
1.2.1 and 1.2.2:
+ Eliminate a potential security vulnerability when
decoding invalid compressed data
+ Eliminate a potential security vulnerability when
decoding specially crafted compressed data
+ Fix a bug when decompressing dynamic blocks with no
distance codes
+ Fix CRC check bug in gzread() after gzungetc()
+ Do not return an error when using gzread() on an empty
file
There are new kits for AXP and IA64, which can be download
as usual from http://www.pi-net.dyndns.org/anonymous/kits/
These zlib kits are used by MySQL, Python, WASD and some
other tools.
*** Security problem in various CA products

sp.
The OpenVMS products affected are Unicenter Performance
for OpenVMS and its older version AdviseIT.

*** Upgrade SWB to V1.7-8
If you use Secure Web Browser for OpenVMS Alpha then
upgrade to the current V1.7-8 version. There are security
problems in V1.7-7. See SSRT5956 for details.

VMS MUSIC VIDEO
There is a very funny VMS related music video DVD by Bruce
Ellis (of BRUDEN training and the Hitchhikers Guide the
VMS Book). It contains two songs (Stuck in UNIX with the
VMS Blues again and Toxic Waste). If you want to buy a
copy contact Amanda Skonetski at vmsgeek1 at hotmail.com
[I have a copy already and it is the best music video
featuring VAX/VMS MACRO-32 code you have seen :-) At the
VMS Bootcamp in Nashua it was shown to everyone on two
morning sessions by popular request!]

PROMIS ON ITANIUM
Release of PROMIS v5.7.2, on Itanium (both OpenVMS and
HP-UX platforms)
http://www.brooks.com/pages/215_promis.cfm. Excerpt from
the release notice...
Some important notes about this release:
Client applications compatible with the PROMIS v5.7.2
suite release, are compatible with PROMIS v5.7.2 for
Itanium (SPC GUI v5.7.2, Performance for PROMIS v2.0.3,
Composer v5.7.2 and @PROMIS v5.7.2). The same hardware
configurations and third party software configurations
have been used for this release as the v5.7.2 PROMIS Suite
release, except where specific versions were required for
Itanium. This is reflected in the documentation. The
upcoming @PROMIS v5.7.2.1 release will be compatible with
both PROMIS v5.7.2 and PROMIS v5.7.2 for Itanium.

NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS ON ITANIUM EXCEEDS TARGET
To help show the momentum behind Itanium HP has been
keeping track of how quickly application vendors roll out
support for the Integrity boxes. Rich Marcello, the
general manager of HP's Business Critical Server unit,
which controls the Integrity platform as well as HP's
HP-UX, OpenVMS, and NonStop operating systems and the use
of Windows and Linux platforms on those boxes, said in his
blog this week that the application count has risen above
5,000 on the Integrity machines. HP had set a goal of
4,500 applications by the end of 2005.
In April 2003, HP said there were over 300 applications on
the Integrity machines and the company had hopes of
getting 1,000 applications on the boxes within the
following 6 to 9 months ....

8.2/IA64 SUCCESS STORIES SURVEY
This item will remain in the newsletter for the
nextseveral months. It's important for early adaptors to
takethis survey.
The 8.2 launch team is now preparing
thepromotional/marketing material related to OpenVMS 8.2
on Integrity.
One of the most effective marketing components are success
stories. OpenVMS 8.2 will be the first production release
of OpenVMS on Integrity creating a chicken-and-egg
problem. How can customers brag about the benefits they
are deriving from OpenVMS 8.2 on Integrity before they
formally exist as a pair?
HP is aware that several customers are experimenting with
OpenVMS 8.2 in some production environments or
environments very close to production. Any company that
fits this description, or who may be reasonably close to
it, can help with a "success story" for presentations and
other marketing purposes.
This will be an opportunity for good publicity all
around, for HP, for customers, and most importantly for
OpenVMS.

ENCRYPTION FOR VMS
Some news on Encryption for VMS product from hp
Work for the OpenVMS V8.3 release on AES-based encryption
is expectedto provide significant performance improvements
over the DES-based encryption, per the security (and
encryption) business manager.
The intent is to fully integrate the encryption within
OpenVMS V8.3, as well -- there's no longer a separate kit,
encryption is expected to become fully system integrated
within V8.3.
With V8.2 and later, no separate license is required for
encryption.
With V8.3 and later, no separate LP kit is expected to be
required.
[The Encryption for OpenVMS Layered product has been
around for a while and provides a API to do encryption and
BACKUP can use it to produce
encrypted backups. However the current version does cause
your backups to be a lot slower and its a separate layered
product kit that you have to install. Before VMS V8.2 you
have to buy a licence to use it. VMS V8.3 is due out next
year for alpha and Itanium.]
