Tárgy: OpenVMS Update - What a great week!

Dear Distribution lists,

It has been two wonderful weeks for VMS, we had our 30th Anniversary, Martin Fink spoke about HP's commitments to OpenVMS and Ann McQuaid has been talking to Press and Analysts every free minute for the last two weeks, which is awesome! Hopefully you have been seeing more in the press. We will wait and do a 30th press update.

Usual disclaimer - this is just an email not a newsletter and I have nothing to do with hiring anyone.

Warm Regards as always have a great weekend,
Sue

***Speaking of Martin Fink's call. I took an action item to the question that Arnold asked about an on line Integrity Configuration. I said that I would send out the answer.

HP does have a tool available which is located at the following link

1.0 From VMS Engineering

We now have the HTTPs OpenView Agents for OpenVMS agents for Integrity Servers available at the same web site:
http://h71000.www7.hp.com/openvms/products/openvms_ovo_agent/index.html
If you remember on September 12th I sent out a message which contain Field Test announcement information
HP is pleased to announce the pre-release version (T8.0-1) of the HTTPS OVO Agents and VMSSPI on OpenVMS Integrity. The production release (Version 8.0) is planned for the end of 2007.
This version of the OVO agents and VMSSPI can only be used with the HP Operations Management (OM) Server for UNIX (OMU 8.x).
Main features and Benefits for the software

The HTTPS communication feature provides highly secure communication between OM 8.x management servers and their managed nodes.

HTTPS-based communication provides simple management through firewalls and uses out-of-the-box Internet Secure Communication using SSL/PKI encryption with server and client certificates for authentication.

HTTPS-based communication provides IP independence.
Managed nodes can be identified by their unique OvCoreID and not necessarily by their IP addresses. HTTPS agents are generally used and administered in the same way as DCE-based agents. Applications are launched in the same way. All functionality that is available with DCE-based agents is also available with HTTPS agents unless explicitly stated otherwise.

Policies for HTTPS agents are created, assigned and deployed in a similar way as templates are for DCE-based agents.

2.0 Sue's Fav's

2.1 PDV-Nord GmbH and BRUDEN-OSSG deliver the first set of Integrity Blade (BL860c) systems with OpenVMS V8.3-1H1 and Oracle 10gR2 RAC.

OpenVMS V8.3-1H1 (announced October 25th 2007) has been installed on a standalone BL860c together with Oracle 10gR2 on Monday October 22nd at the customer site.

This week Guy Peleg of BRUDEN-OSSG configured 2 OpenVMS clusters running OpenVMS V8.3-1H1 and Oracle 10gR2 RAC. Each (mixed architecture) cluster consists of 2 BL860c's and one DS15 serving as a voting member, running OpenVMS V8.3. The Installation took 5 days, at the end all production systems are up and running.

The Customer is a financial company in Hamburg, Germany.

For more information please contact PDV-Nord GmbH at info at pdv-nord.de or BRUDEN-OSSG at solutions at bruden.com

2.5 "In January, the update mentioned an ES40 emulator being written by Camiel Vanderhoeven, an OpenVMS hobbyist and enthusiast from the Netherlands.
Recently, version 0.14 was released; and though a lot of work still needs to be done, this version has successfully booted OpenVMS 7.3-1 on Tuesday, October 30th, 2007 at 18:32. (the boot was a conversational one, and yielded a valid directory listing).

Since the emulator is being released under the GNU GPL (open source license), all versions released are available for download from http://sourceforge.net/projects/es40. Source code as well as Windows executables are available for download. The emulator is known to run on Windows, Linux (Alpha and i386), and OpenVMS Alpha.

If you happen to discover mistakes in the code, have neat ideas, want to get involved, or if you have any questions, you can reach Camiel at camiel at camicom.com. He'd greatly appreciate that. "

4.1 A new case study has been published on a CHARON VAX implementation by Salem Automation for extension of life of a multiple VAX VMS systems at the largest community college group in the US, Maricopa Community College. VAX systems at ten Maricopa colleges were converted to the CHARON VAX environment within a matter of weeks by Salem Automation. The CHARON VAX upgrade enabled two key disk I/O performance improvements, the move from 10 MB to 100 MB network adapters and the use of current, high speed Serial-Attached-SCSI (SAS) drive technology in the HP servers. These performance improvements make the extraction and transmission of the legacy data run several hundred percent faster, allowing operations staff to complete their work in less shifts and shortening processing windows for everyone. Batch jobs and backups run anywhere from 200 to 400% faster and online users see a more responsive system because there is less contention for resources during the day. Other comments from Maricopa IT staff
included: "Focus jobs are taking 2 minutes instead of 40" and "Reboot takes 10 minutes instead of 40 minutes". Complete story is available at:

4.2 GNAT Pro for OpenVMS on HP Integrity servers

Date and Time
Tuesday, November 20, 2007: 8:00 am PST / 11:00 EST / 17:00 CET

AdaCore's GNAT Pro for HP OpenVMS I64 is a full-featured Ada development environment offering a natural migration path for Ada applications from other platforms. It includes a compiler that can handle all three versions of the Ada standard -- Ada 83, Ada 95, and Ada 2005 -- and provides a rich set of auxiliary tools and an extensive set of libraries. Ada-aware debugging is provided through HP's OpenDebug.

In this half-hour webinar AdaCore, with HP's participation, will describe the features and benefits of the GNAT Pro Ada development environment on HP OpenVMS I64 and answer questions from the audience. A particular focus will be on how to port Ada code from HP Ada on VAX and Alpha servers to GNAT Pro on OpenVMS I64. GNAT Pro supplies an extensive set of pragmas and attributes that are compatible with HP Ada, and for most Ada code the porting process should be reasonably straightforward. For those situations where the program makes architectural assumptions that do not apply to I64 (for example 32-bit
addresses) the webinar will identify the issues and offer effective solutions.

HP participants in the webinar will include Swastik Bihani (Product Manager, HP Business Critical Systems).
AdaCore participants will include Ben Brosgol (Project Manager), and Douglas Rupp and Vasiliy Fofanov (Principal Engineers).

You can enroll for this webinar at http://www.adacore.com/home/gnatpro/webinars

4.3 KayCee Software
http://www.kaycee.net/kcsi/
KayCee Software is a great long time VMS Partner that has excellent software for Colleges and Universities. This turnkey software solution enables the educational establishments to manage different areas on their campus using VMS. And of course they are on Integrity. Kelly (owner) has been a strong VMS champion for years and we are fortunate that he is part of the team.
