Subject: Open VMS positions
HI Sue,
Hope you are doing well and thanks for the loads of information that
you have been sharing with us.
I have seen a couple of VMS recruiting emails sent from you in the past.
I currently have two VMS positions open and I was wondering if it was
appropriate to send them to you so that you could circulate it among
your distribution lists. If it is not the right forum for this, please accept
my apologies.

Linux article with an OpenVMS mention
Linux Migration is Automatic at HP (many thanks to Dan Klein)
Network Computing / August 6, 2004
By Clement Teo
While unofficial deployments of Linux occurred in workgroup
environments prior to this, the first CIO-approved deployment of Linux
within HP started in 1998. According to Rick Sewell, Linux business
manager, enterprise storage and servers, HP Asia-Pacific, a team within
HP-IT analysed and positioned the benefits, risks and rewards of
introducing Linux as another strategic platform within HP's internal
infrastructure. They then implemented Linux for use internally on over
5,000 systems in countries worldwide.
In fact, Sewell says that Linux was a critical technical enabler for the
HP/Compaq merger. He recalls: "During the clean room discussions,
platform support was threatening to be a large money sink. Compaq
data centres could not support HP-UX and other HP platforms. HP data
centres could not support Tru-64 and other Compaq platforms. But
both data centres had Linux expertise. By deploying several merged
company services on Linux instead of HP-UX/Tru-64, HP was able to
save costs and streamline its IT infrastructure."
While Sewell is keen to stress that HP does not have a general
migration strategy to Linux, the company uses Linux in areas where
suitable applications are available. Says Sewell: "HP does not have a
general Linux migration strategy, so there is no specific phase strategy.
But Linux is used in addition to HP-UX and Windows within our internal
infrastructure."
Supporting The Community
It also makes sense for HP to operate in the Linux environment as the
open source community starts to play a role in its business plans. In
2003, the company announced Linux-based revenue in excess of
US$2.5 billion for its fiscal year. "Our Linux services and solutions
business grew at 40%," says Martin Fink, vice-president, Linux, HP.
Sewell points out that the company has been heavily involved with
Linux and the open source community for a number of years, and also
sponsored a number of open source organisations. "[We] directly
contribute to the open source community through projects such as the
recently announced Scalable File System (Lustre) and the IA-64 kernel
that is used in all distributions of Linux," he adds.
Sewell says that examples of Linux use for important applications
within HP's infrastructure include incoming e-mail (3TB/year) routed
through RIM gateways; core DNS infrastructure (about 100 systems);
clustered Enterprise Directory, using LDAP; DHCP/IP address
management; network time (NTP critical element for HP infrastructure);
internal and secure instant messaging network (Jabber); electronic
design automation (Synopsys); utility data centre deployment
(including 36-node IA-64 Linux cluster for HP Labs research computing);
and Oracle 9i RAC Application Testing and Validation for production
deployment.
Employee remote e-mail access from the Internet is accessed through
secure e-mail gateways (on Linux/Integrity). "HP supports Linux
running on both HP ProLiant (32-bit Intel) and Integrity (64 bit Intel)
servers," adds Sewell.
He expects the use of Linux for internal IT systems will increase over
time as more and more applications become available. However, as HP
does not have a general Linux migration strategy, HP will continue to
utilise systems running Windows, HP-UX, OpenVMS and Non-Stop
Kernel (NSK).
Even on the Dektop
While HP does deploy Linux-based desktop software for their chip
designers and software developers, these are in small pockets spread
across the organisation. "We use the standard distros based on Red
Hat 8 or 9-it comes packaged with both Gnome/KDE, and most people
use KDE on dual boot desktops," says Sewell.
While he was chary about revealing the cost of the migration, citing
secretive corporate policy, he anticipates savings and return on
investment for the Linux move. Sewell did reiterate that it was a widely
supported move within HP. "The migration for internal infrastructure
was planned within HP-IT. HP Managed Services (MSDD) designs and
manages the base Linux infrastructure for HP-IT deployments
worldwide based on a program called LinuxCOE (Linux Common
Operating Environment). Currently, there is an Open Source team in IT
that coordinates and shepherds Linux and open source deployments
within HP," says Sewell
