Dear Folks,

This OpenVMS Pearl comes from one of our Partners, Legato.

The Environment
Southeastern Freight Lines operates an enterprise network that
connects
1,400 HP Compaq Windows 2000 desktop PCs to 40 HP-Compaq
Windows 2000
servers and a cluster of four OpenVMS servers on Alpha hardware. At
SEFL's 60 remote sites, 750 laptops connect to headquarters in
Lexington, South Carolina, via Frame Relay or direct Internet access
(DIA). PC users access the OpenVMS servers (OpenVMS cluster) using
Reflections.

The company runs its core business applications, developed in-house,
on
the OpenVMS servers, and its Microsoft Office business applications run
on SEFL's Windows network. LEGATO NetWorker, which runs on a
Windows
2000 server, backs up the data on 40 servers and 20 PCs to a Compaq
ESL
891 tape library with eight SDLT drives and 198 slots. The OpenVMS
cluster has its own fibre-based Storage Area Network (SAN). NetWorker
OpenVMS Storage Node backs up the data on the SAN directly to the
Compaq
DSL 891 tape library. SEFL has a total of 3 terabytes (TBs) of
information on its network.

The Solution
LEGATO NetWorker, NetWorker OpenVMS Client, and NetWorker
OpenVMS
Storage Node

The Business Benefits
NetWorker with NetWorker OpenVMS Client and OpenVMS Storage
Node takes
the place of two systems, backing back up SEFL's Windows and
OpenVMS
data NetWorker reduced SEFL's full backup window from 12 hours to 3
NetWorker improves productivity and decreases maintenance costs,
increases utilization of SEFL's existing hardware, eliminates the need
to purchase duplicate backup equipment and associated licensing fees
Over the years, Southeastern Freight Lines developed two computing
environments: an OpenVMS system for its shipping, order-tracking and
other core business applications, and an enterprise Windows network
for
its word-processing, spreadsheet and other business tasks. The
systems
interoperate transparently - PC users can easily access data on the
OpenVMS cluster - but one critical operation remained separate: the
backup solution. "We were running VMS ABS to back up our OpenVMS
data,"
said Billy Reardon, Manager of Computer Operations, "and a leading
Windows-based solution to back up the Windows data. It was very
expensive to maintain duplicate hardware and software for the two
systems. When we finally started to outgrow both, we decided to
implement one product to perform both backups. After carefully
researching the leading vendors in the market-place, we chose LEGATO
NetWorker as our standard, complete backup solution."....
