Platforms yet - OK for public use

Dear Distribution lists,

>From today's IT week there is a very nice article and I have copied a
portion of it below.

Many thanks to Alex Daniels from Lloyds TSB for sending this along, a
true VMS Champion and I have had the privilege to meet many.

Warm Regards,
Sue

There's life in the old platforms yet
Activities by HP and Novell could halt the decline of NetWare and
OpenVMS platforms
IT Week 09 Feb 2005

...... OpenVMS lay at the heart of the world's first client/server
systems. Much of client/server moved on to Unix, Windows and Linux,
and
OpenVMS should have died. It didn't because, like NetWare, it was
remarkably good at its job. It is still found running mission-critical
applications in the financial markets, where its reliability and
security has made it all but irreplaceable. This is despite the fact
that, until recently, it has run on hardware that makes the word
"obsolete" an understatement.

But HP's decision to port OpenVMS to its Itanium-based Integrity
servers
not only gives established users a modern hardware option (while
cutting
support costs for HP), but opens up the possibility of new customers.

A proven system offering high reliability and great security is an
interesting option for a growing number of firms, particularly as
web-based applications spread, requiring good transaction
management
capabilities
