Focus: A radically changed economy demands new approaches to IT. The worst global recession in decades has left its mark on virtually every business. Even as business leaders around the world struggle to maintain or regain their footing, they must also confront a fundamentally changed economic environment.

New technologies, continuing tight capital resources and evolving marketplace expectations are driving new business models - offering opportunity to leaders sufficiently savvy and bold to take advantage of them.

IDC senior analyst Joseph Pucciarelli believes that business and IT leaders must act now - even before the global economy fully recovers - to address the new environment and its implications. Visit http://www.hp.com/learn/recovery to learn more and register. myCommunity

12:30:00 PM MembershipMember TestimonialJill Bourman, Network & Desktop Services Supervisor, Anoka-Hennepin ISD11, Minnesota Chapter. "I have still not come down from cloud 9 and I am still in awe about my invitation-only event last week to have the opportunity to sit in on a round table discussion with Mark Hurd and staff." "Due to my involvement with Connect and my current position with Anoka-Hennepin ISD11, I was able to attend the round table discussion in Minneapolis at the Works Computing Training Facility. There were 29 people in attendance including Mark Hurd and his staff so it was a very small group which led to some great discussions. I definitely found some first-hand experiences and direct career benefit by attending the event. There were a few folks present from the public sector and I had the opportunity to ask Mark Hurd whether HP had a product or service roadmap for Education or the Public sector? He replied right away with a contact for my area that would be available to visit us to speak around our questions and present the K-12 roadmap for Education. This information and product roadmap will be invaluable to see the direction in which HP is going in my profession involving technology and education." "My involvement with Connect has given me such opportunity and has led to many networking events that have become invaluable in my daily profession. My staff and I have been able to tap into many resources that we would not have had and find solutions to daily problems. Also, the Connect online network (connect-community.org) that was launched in the past year has made it very easy for me and other chapter members to network with others throughout the US and globally by our common interests, profile settings, and special interest groups (SIGs). Thanks to Connect!" "Also, I continually gain career benefits from Connect through training and educational resources. Either through live presentations at chapter meetings or the webinars sponsored through Connect, my staff and I are continually learning and expanding our knowledge with new technologies. This is key since the tech world is constantly evolving and right when you feel like you have learned one new tool or piece of technology, it is already "OLD Hat" and onto something new. By attending chapter meetings, I am able to listen to valuable presentations, participate in Q& A and if someone has a problem, it has been written down and there is a follow-up. You can´t beat that one!"

The purpose of the Connect advocacy program, also called "The Community Voice", is to leverage the voice of our global community to deliver unified messages to HP. Our ultimate goal is to facilitate a two-way stream of communication that results in solutions and positive change for the benefit of both HP and the user community.

The Advocacy Steering Committee, under the volunteer leadership of Sam Ayers, holds a monthly planning session that is attended by HP Liaisons, SIG leaders, and Connect executive leadership.

Members of the Advocacy Steering Committee and HP Liaisons attend each Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting. The Top 3 Advocacy requests from each SIG are collected at the annual SIG meetings, and are subsequently reviewed with HP leadership. The requests and HP´s responses are published to the Connect membership and in The Connection magazine.

To get involved in advocacy, all you have to do is join (or start) a Special Interest Group (SIG). The advocacy process happens automatically! If you have any questions, please contact Connect. 24 August 2009The dismal economy has brought thoughts of the unemployment line to people in nearly every profession, and it has made many of them feel the need to constantly glance over their shoulders, notes Nina Buik, a careers expert and president of the Hewlett-Packard user group Connect. In this type of economic climate, everyone can begin to seem like a potential competitor, and some people will react by burrowing into their cubicles and keeping a low profile. Read more... HP Highlight
An uncertain economy is shrinking budgets and technology leaders are faced with hard decisions: Where do you cut? Where do you spend? How do you get the most from what you have? The choices you make today will help determine whether your enterprise emerges from this downturn lean and competitive or emaciated and weak-a winner or a loser.
HP recommends you adopt three strategies that can help you cut costs and conserve cash in the short-term, while building competitive advantage for the long-term:Standardize, optimize and automate. Achieve short-term gains; enhance efficiency and lower costs through infrastructure modernization.Use flexible sourcing. Keep critical projects alive and align technology costs to use through outsourcing, financing, pay-per-use and cloud computing.Prioritize to meet your new business imperatives. Align technology investments to business value by using a common methodology and set of tools.Have ideas for upcoming issues of Connect Now? Please give us your thoughts and we´ll do our best to incorporate comments into future issues.
